Superfically Sino-Vietnamese word from (proper noun) and (mountain).

The name of the mountain range is a tên chữ and a mix between a translation and a phonetic matching of the tên Nôm rú Hống (Hống mountain) and ngàn Hống.

The town name is taken from the name of mountain range.
