Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Potentially attested as edenwerfa in 944, attested with certainty as etwerth in 1314. Borrowed from West Frisian Idaerd, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Eda (“a personal name”) and werf (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to wert (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”).
