Etymology[edit]

First attested with certainty as edeswald in 1245. Borrowed from West Frisian Idzegea, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Iddo (a personal name) or Ede and (village, village area). The second element was initially wald (marsh forest, swamp forest).
