Etymology[edit]

Original term in the Ijesha dialect is Uléṣà. Several folk etymologies exist, the most prominent being from ulé (home) +‎ ṣà (to choose, to select), literally The home that we chose or ulé (home) +‎ òòṣà (orisha), literally Home of the orisha, compare with Ìjẹ̀ṣà, Ùjẹ̀ṣà
