Usage notes

• Many Indonesians regard the term as insulting, mainly as it gradually carried a negative connotation due to the link to unskilled migrant workers and illegal immigrants by the Malaysian media, but in part also because it has been reported to mean "whore" in Pontianak Malay. Indonesia has requested that it not be used, and Malaysia has removed it from official use. It continues to be used as an abbreviation in various media, and even by some Indonesians.
