Usage notes[edit]

  • Many Indonesians regard the term as insulting,[1] mainly as it gradually carried a negative connotation due to the link to unskilled migrant workers and illegal immigrants by the Malaysian media,[2] but in part also because it has been reported to mean "whore" in Pontianak Malay.[3] Indonesia has requested that it not be used,[1][3] and Malaysia has removed it from official use. It continues to be used as an abbreviation in various media, and even by some Indonesians.[4]
