Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German klippe, borrowed from Middle Low German klippe. Cognate with Dutch klip. Further origin unsettled, but very probably related with German Kliff, English cliff.

  1. rock that is partly covered by (sea) water
  2. cliff (steep rock face)

  3. (in particular) steep coast

Usage notes[edit]

  • The use of Klippe as a synonym of Kliff (cliff) may not be technically correct, but is quite common.
