German surname, from Middle Low German klopper (clapper, hammer, bobbin), from the medieval name Chlodobert, from Frankish for "famously bright," from Proto-Germanic derivatives of Proto-Indo-European *ḱlu-tó-s (famous) << *ḱlew- (to hear) + *bʰerHǵ- (to be bright, shine). Compare Proto-Germanic *hleumô (hearing) and *berhtaz (shining, bright).
