Noun[edit]

Knight Bachelor (plural Knights Bachelor)

  1. (British) A man who has been knighted by the monarch but not as a member of one of the organized orders of chivalry; the lowest rank of knight in the British honours system.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The post-nominal letters "Kt" are sometimes erroneously (and rarely officially) used by holders of this title.
  • There is no direct equivalent rank for females, women are typically appointed Dames of the British Empire instead.
