Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German kornel- (cornel) +‎ Kirsche (cherry). The first element, which is attested in Middle High German kornelboum and Old High German kornilboum, is from Vulgar Latin *cornicula, diminutive of Latin cornus (European cornel).
