  1. A region in the Middle East inhabited mostly by the Kurds. It encompasses parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria.

    2. A province in northwestern Iran lying within the aforementioned Kurdish-majority region.

Usage notes[edit]

Although parts of northeastern Iran and central-western Turkey also have a majority-Kurdish population, these areas are generally not considered to be part of Kurdistan, the term being reserved for the main contiguous Kurdish-majority area where Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria meet.
