Translingual[edit]

Laniisoma buckleyi (Andean mourner)

Etymology[edit]

Lanii (genitive of Lanius, shrike genus) +‎ -soma (body), from the supposed shrike-like appearance.

Proper noun[edit]

Laniisoma n

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Tityridae – Laniisoma elegans, the shrike-like laniisoma, also known as the shrike-like cotinga or elegant mourner.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The vernacular names are especially misleading or unhelpful, the bird not being very "shrike-like" and no longer being in genus Cotinga or family Cotingidae. The mourners are in several genera, not all in Tityridae.
