East Central German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. First attested as Lauter (1460), then luterawe (1464), zu der lautere (1536), aus der Lautere (1582).

  • Walter Fröbe proposes the place could have been named after a hypothetical Lokator 'Lothar', which would make the original form *Lotharawe (Lothar's meadow)
  • Named after the upper franconian Lauter by the first settlers in remembrance of their home
