Etymology[edit]

First attested as letthemutha and leithemutha in the first half of the 11th century. Compound of a hydronym derived from Proto-Germanic *lag- (water) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi and either Old Frisian mutha (mouth) or Old Dutch mutha (mouth).
