English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Named after the former Kingdom of Loango. The island was used as a holding location for slaves transported from Africa. Compare Congo Cay.

An erroneous local legend holds that the toponym derives from "love-and-go" and refers to a former brothel on the island. This folk etymology arose because of the insertion of a v into the toponym.
