Transliteration of Arabic مَحْمُود (maḥmūd, literally praised, laudable), the passive participle of the Form I verb حَمِدَ (ḥamida, to praise), from the triconsonantal root ح م د (ḥ-m-d). The name Muhammad comes from the same root, and has a similar meaning.
