Etymology[edit]

From Old English manig (many) +‎ treow (tree).

Proper noun[edit]

Manningtree

  1. A small town and civil parish with a town council in Tendring district, Essex, England (OS grid ref TM1031).

Usage notes[edit]

Manningtree claims to be the smallest town in England, which may be true in terms of area. Although a branch line with a passenger service passes the town, its railway station is on the main line, about a mile to the west in Lawford parish.
