Etymology[edit]
Recorded as Maperteshale in the Domesday Book, the village's name derives from the rare Old English personal name Mæþelbeorht, which is formed by the elements mæþel (“assembly”) and beorht (“bright, clear”), + -s- + healh (“corner, recess, nook”).
