Named after French parasitologist and zoologist Mathieu Naegler +‎ -ia (nominal suffix for eponym genus names).

A taxonomic genus within the family Vahlkampfiidae – diphasic amoeboid protozoans that are characterized by a predominate amoeboid stage and a minute flagellate stage with two flagella, that occur especially in stagnant water and are often coprozoic, and that include one (Naegleria fowleri) causing meningoencephalitis in humans.
