Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as nurch in 1139. Etymology unknown. The proposed derivations from *Northeggia ("northern corner") and *Nî-urch ("New Orch", referring to a noble clan) do not match the oldest attestations of the toponym.

See also Dutch Low Saxon Nörg.
