Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as notselt in 1299-1301. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound of an unclear first and second element. The first element has been variously read as Old Dutch noda (low-lying swampland), Middle Dutch not (use, profit) and Middle Dutch noot (cattle). The second element has been interpreted as a term cognate to Old English selet (willow forest) or a term derived from Proto-Germanic *sali (domicile, home).
