From Russian Новоро́ссия (Novoróssija), from но́вый (nóvyj, new) + Росси́я (Rossíja, Russia).

  1. (historical) An area north of the Black Sea which was conquered by the Russian Empire at the end of the 18th century, located in present-day Ukraine.
  2. A proposed confederation of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic, breakaway states involved in the ongoing Ukraine crisis.
