Etymology[edit]

Attested as Oostbuert in 1639. Compound of oost (east-, eastern), the hydronym Vuile Graft and dijk (levee). The village was initially called Oostbuurt (compound of oost (east-, eastern) and buurt (hamlet, small settlement)). The element oost was added to distinguish the settlement from West-Graftdijk.
