New Latin, from Ancient Greek πᾰρᾰ- (para-, beside) +‎ γόνῐμος (gónimos, productive, fertile), from γόνος (gónos, seed, genitals) +‎ -ῐμος (-imos, -able), for its ovaries and testes are next to each other.
