Etymology[edit]

From Pentastoma +‎ -ida, from neuter plural of New Latin pentastomus, from Ancient Greek πεντάστομος (pentástomos, with five mouths), from πέντε (pénte, five) +‎ στόμα (stóma, mouth) +‎ -ος (-os, adjectival suffix), in reference to the four hooks outside of the oral openings that make them appear to have five mouths.
