Etymology 1[edit]

With contraction (as in earlier German Pfirsch), from Middle High German and Old High German persich, pirsich, northern variants of phersich, phirsich, from Latin persica. The development -irs--iis- is regular; cf. Kiisch(t), Fiischt.

From Middle High German bersich, from Old High German bersih, extended form of bars, whence German Barsch, etc. The further development as in etymology 1. For the initial p-, influence by French perche is possible.
