Proto-Balto-Slavic[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *yéh₃sti ~ *ih₃sénti, akin to Ancient Greek ζώννυμι (zṓnnumi, “to gird”) (nu-present), probably dial. ζούσθω (zoústhō) (dʰe-present).
Reconstruction notes[edit]
Modern descendants have reanalyzed the conjugation to je-present with ā-preterite. Athematic inflection is attested in Old Lithuanian.[1]
Verb[edit]
*jṓˀstei[2]
Conjugation[edit]
Fixed accent, originally athematic: *jṓˀsti ~ *jṓˀsinti. Later descendants have je-present.
Derived terms[edit]
- *jṓˀstas (“girdled, banded”) (t-participle)
Related terms[edit]
Descendants[edit]
- East Baltic:
- Proto-Slavic: *jasati (“to tear into strips”) (probably)
