Etymology[edit]
Probably from an extension of Proto-Indo-European *h₂en-:
- Kortland: Reanalyzed from the duplicated form *h₂ne-h₂nḱ- of *h₂neḱ- (“to reach, to obtain”), with elemination of infix -n-. Favoured by Derksen.
- Toporov: From k-extension of *h₂neh₂-.
