Etymology[edit]
Feminine ī-stem derivation of Proto-Indo-European *ḱas- with a nasal suffix. Related to Proto-Germanic *hesô (“hare”), Sanskrit शश (śaśa, “hare, rabbit”), and Latin cānus (“grey”).
