Likely a thematicization of an s-stem, Pre-Germanic *h₂enǵʰos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enǵʰ- (“to tighten”). Related to Latin angor (“suffocation, anxiety”), Sanskrit अंहस् (aṃhas, “anxiety”).
