Etymology[edit]
From *harjaz (“army, warband”) + *-anaz. Cognate with Ancient Greek κοίρανος (koíranos, “king, ruler, lord”).

Usage notes[edit]
- This term only survives in Old Norse and Icelandic, where it is used as a synonym for Odin. It may have had this restricted sense already in Proto-Germanic.
