From Proto-Indo-European *pḱórmos (shame, grief, torment, pain), from *pḱer-. Cognate with Proto-Slavic *sormъ (shame), Persian شرم , Avestan 𐬟𐬱𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬨𐬀 (fšarəma, sense of shame).
