From Proto-Indo-European *senikos (old) equivalent to *senaz (old) +‎ *-īgaz (forms adjectives from nouns). Cognates include Ancient Greek ἕνος (hénos), Sanskrit सन (sána), Old Armenian հին (hin) and Latin senex.
