Etymology[edit]
From Pre-Germanic *strongʰos, an adjective formed from the strong verb *stringaną,[1] from Proto-Indo-European *strengʰ- (“pulled tight, straight, constricted”), from Proto-Indo-European *ster- (“stiff, rigid”). Cognate with Latvian strangs (“brave, brisk, fresh”).
