From Proto-Indo-European *misdʰós (reward), from *mey- (to exchange (gifts)) +‎ *dʰeh₁- (to do, put) +‎ *-ós (deverbal suffix). Cognate with Ancient Greek μισθός (misthós, reward), Proto-Slavic *mьzda (payment), Proto-Germanic *mizdō (reward).
