Etymology[edit]

From late, southern dialectal Proto-Indo-European *sélos ~ *sélesos (marsh). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἕλος (hélos, marsh-meadow), Old Armenian եղտիւր (ełtiwr, marsh).[1]
