From Proto-Indo-European *kewHp- (heap; to heap). Cognate with Sanskrit कूप (kūpa, well, hole), Latin cūpa (tub, cask), Old High German hubil, Old Saxon huvil (hill), Lithuanian kaũpas (heap), kaupiù (to heap).[1][2]
