From Proto-Indo-European *átta. Cognates include Hittite 𒀜𒋫𒀸 (attas), Gothic 𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌰 (atta), Old Church Slavonic отьць (otĭcĭ) and Ancient Greek ἄττα (átta).
