Proto-Mordvinic[edit]

Reconstruction[edit]

Bereczki (1986: 45) proposes earlier *joŋgəks by comparison with Moksha [script needed] (joŋga) in dialectal [script needed] (aťamjoŋga, rainbow) (compare usual атямъёнкс (aťamjonks)), but also accepts the usual derivation from Proto-Uralic.

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Uralic *joŋse, cognate with Proto-Finnic *jousi, Proto-Samoyedic *jïntə, and Proto-Samic *juoksë.

Noun[edit]

*joŋs

  1. bow

Descendants[edit]

  • Erzya: ёнкс (jonks), ёнс (jons)
  • Moksha: ёнкс (jonks)
