Borrowed with a metathesis from an Indo-Iranian language, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram. Compare Sanskrit सहस्र (sahasra) and Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬰𐬀𐬢𐬭𐬀 (hazaŋra).
