Per Snoj, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gʰélh₂dih₂ ~ *gʰl̥h₂dyéh₂s[1] (proterokinetic). Oblique stem attested in Ancient Greek χάλαζα (khálaza, hail, sleet).
