Etymology

Fossilized n-participle of *dьrati (“to tear”) +‎ *-nъ, from Proto-Indo-European *der- (“to tear”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *turnaz (“bitter; anger, wrath”) and akin to Sanskrit दीर्ण (dīrṇa, “scattered”), Sanskrit दृणाति (dṛṇāti, “to tear, to burst”).
