Proto-Slavic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Traditionally connected with Lithuanian smáugti, English smoke, Ancient Greek σμύχω (smúkhō), Armenian մուխ (mux). The root vocalism presents serious problems; influence of other roots has been proposed, such as *pragnǫti (thirst). It may be instead compared to Lithuanian smógos (thirst), smogóti.

Verb[edit]

*smagnǫti impf

  1. dry, wither, thirst
