Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂en(h₁)tmen-, itself from *h₂enh₁- (to breathe) + *h₁éh₁t-men- (breath; soul), whence also Sanskrit आत्मन् (ātman). For similar semantic derivation, Ancient Greek ψῡχή (psūkhḗ), θῡμός (thūmós), Latin animus and Persian جان.
