Etymology[edit]
Compared to Proto-Mongolic *kara (“black”), Proto-Japonic *kuro,[1] however, the Altaic hypothesis is not accepted by many scholars.
May be related to Khitan 黑 (kara, “west”) since colors indicate direction in Turkic mythology.[2]
