Etymology[edit]

Compared to Proto-Mongolic *kara (black), Proto-Japonic *kuro,[1] however, the Altaic hypothesis is not accepted by many scholars.

May be related to Khitan (kara, west) since colors indicate direction in Turkic mythology.[2]
