Borrowed from Late Latin margarita, modified by folk-etymological from *mari (sea) +‎ *greutō (sand, dust). Parallel borrowing with Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌹𐌺𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍄𐌿𐍃 (marikreitus, pearl).
