Etymology[edit]

It's quite a trek, but likely this verb originally meant to "bend, bow", then developed to early Germanic "turn, twist > change", then "change (goods), barter". This development is even somewhat mirrored in the word change, which ultimately goes back to Celtic *kambyo-, "change" < *kambos, "crooked, twisted". Burgundaz (talk) 00:53, 6 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
