German merger[edit]

I don't think this would have merged, as umlaut would have distinguished them. That said, the umlauted form does exist in German, but is probably nonstandard. I remember hearing it in the parody song "wir käufen alle bei ALDI". —CodeCat 17:22, 5 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

@CodeCat: I'd be wary of relying on that parody song, and suspect that wir käufen is not a genuine dialectal form (or if so, is a very late secondary formation), unlike du käufst, er/sie käuft, whose umlaut can easily be analogical after du läufst, er/sie läuft, and then does not reflect anything old. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 20:52, 10 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
