Why is the expected OHG form *ledig? I would expect *lidig or am I forgetting something? In fact, lidec is attested a couple of times in MHG, and so are its descendants in modern dialects. Theoretically, the form with -e- or the whole word could be a borrowing from the north. It's much less common in High German, where it's missing from many dialects, than in Low German and Low Franconian, where it's the common word for "empty". There are also a few attestions for *leidec, which could be a hypercorrection for a northern (Low or Central German) *lēdech. Kolmiel (talk) 20:57, 30 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
