@Rua This verb has some issues, Orel reconstructs *spūtjanan but this can't be correct looking at the descendants. The attested Middle Dutch form shows 'oi' (also 'ei'and 'ou') which cannot be derived from ū. Michiel van de Vaan suggests that the proto-form should be *spīwatjaną instead. See this article. Another oddity is that the English entry suggests that 'spout' is a loan word from Middle Dutch, but I can't find sources that back that up. --DerRudymeister (talk) 10:26, 1 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think the arguments make sense. Given that OHG clearly must reflect an *-atjaną verb anyway, we might as well assume the other forms come from it too. —Rua (mew) 10:45, 1 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
