ESIJa lists a lot of Indo-Iranian brown and yellow animal names, including big felines, as a descendant of this. If that is correct, then the basic meaning of the PIE word is not “beaver” but rather “a brown animal”. --Vahag (talk) 13:56, 6 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Well, I think that there are multiple derivations (like PGmc *berô) all coming from a "brown" root, but they seem to be parallel nominalisations to me.
